Nicholas Bennett is a studio baby. The studio? Grafton Studios in Vineyard Town. The famous parent? His father, internationally-renowned songwriter and music producer, Mikey Bennett. It’s no surprise then that from an early age Nicholas encountered Jamaican Reggae stalwarts like Shabba Ranks, Maxi Priest and Beenie Man on the regular. Internationally renowned artists, such as Roberta Flack and Cyndi Lauper, have worked in the studio and of course he was there absorbing a wealth of information from these incredibly talented entertainers. Under the tutelage of his father, Nicky was encouraged to become a studio engineer; and over the years he developed a sound he calls R&D (Rhythm & Dancehall). It was a marriage between the Jamaican sounds of Reggae and Dancehall and American Pop and R&B. Artists such as R. Kelly, Marvin Gaye and Craig David stand out in his list of musical influences.

A year after leaving high school, his family’s home was destroyed by fire. Nicky B reflects, “ I didn’t want to do anything or see anyone.” The ordeal prompted him to reassess his life, and it was at that pivotal moment he decided to put aside his dream of becoming a chef and devote his time to working in the studio as an engineer. At a recording session with Beenie Man, 17 year-old Nicky hummed what was to become the hook on the track “This is What it Feels Like.” At the insistence of the King of Dancehall, the shy engineer acquiesced and recorded the hook. As they say, the rest is history. Nicky B was officially on the music scene and hasn’t looked back since.

After scoring a handful of hits in Jamaica the ‘Young Prince of Dancehall’ embarked on a five-city tour of Japan in 2004. “The audiences in Japan responded positively to my music. I felt good,” he relates. “I knew that I was on to something and this made me feel I was heading in the right direction.” No doubt, even Japanese Kickboxer Yassuhiro Kido is a fan. In his K-1 World Max match on April 21st 2009 versus South Korea’s Soo Hwan Lee, he entered the arena to Beenie Man’s “King of the Dancehall and Nicky B’s “Wanna Be Your Man (All I Want)”. How serendipitous, the King and Young Prince of Dancehall together again! (See it HERE, Nicky B comes on at 2:26)

Nicky B has shared the stage with Lil Zane, and Kanye West –thanks to his sister, music video director Kimala Bennett. Back in 2007 he entertained 50,000 screaming fans at Germany’s Summerjam, and to date has performed at a number of events in Jamaica. I was on hand to see him at Tarrus Riley and Friends in Dec 2009 where he shared the stage with Reggae music’s current stars like Chino McGregor, I-Octane, Queen Ifrica and Duane Stephenson and legends like Freddie McGregor and Jimmy Riley.

Over the years, Nicky B has been featured on some of Dancehall’s most catchy and popular riddims including DreamWeaver Riddm ("The Way We Roll") Mad Guitar Riddm (“She Nuh Ready Yet”), Chiney K Riddim (“High”), Chandelier Riddm ("Rain or Fall”), Bubble Up Riddim (“Wanna Be Your Man”), Golden Gate Riddim (“Anybody Out There”), Guardian Angel Riddim (Best Friends) , Pelaean Riddm (“Ready for Love”), European Swing Riddim (“Single Ladies”), Fitz Riddim (“Ms. Nuclear”) Thrilla Riddim (“Stop My Flo”), and Higher Octane Riddim (“Give It Away” with Shane-O). I couldn’t help but list so many…as one person commented on his you tube video’s respect for nicky, always choosing the best riddims and makin amazing musique.

Oh la, la; and speaking of la musique, you should know that being from l’ile de la Dominique, land of cadance and World Creole Music Festival, I just fell in love with his sound when I heard Nicky singing on a zouk love riddim. Listen the song “Let The Music” (see video below) and you just might. He has collaborated on other zouk love songs like “For Real” with Samantha Nourry, and “Rude Bwoy Love” with Naelle. He even hasFrench Pop ("Hypnotise" with Parisa), Kompa (“Give You Love”) and French Lovers Rock (“Never Leave” with Goldee) songs in his repertoire. Nicky B has added his unique R&D flavour to songs by notable French Dancehall artists like Fefe Typical, (“Baby Girl”), Lord Kossity (Stand Up”, “Hotel Room”, Gangsta Girl) Fenomen 10 Gla (“Dirty Wine”) and Zorro Chang (“If You Came”) ensuring a wide fan base in the French speaking world and that of non-French speakers who just like the music. Someone commented on You Tube: his voice is soooo freaking sexxyyy lol...is he haitian???? I guess he could take that as a compliment huh.

Though the songs on his current R&D project were recorded in various cities around the world (Paris, Belgium, Los Angeles, Kingston) one theme remains the same, “I’m a hopeless romantic so a lot of the songs are about love and the enjoyment of life. Women relate to my lyrics. I write what they want to hear from men.” Number one song on my list is “Sweet Little Addiction” produced by Konvict (as in Akon’s Konvict??? Yes the very)--Peep the video below.

“Computer Love”, “ “Forever” (Forever Riddim), “I Only Want to Love You”, and “Care About You” are songs clearly written for the ladies. And they show him mad love online: nicky b's voice is sooo melodic... u have to love anything he sings... wow!, hee'sss soooo sexiiii..i wanna meet him..and his voice is amazing; Man dis dude is wicked n wicked sexy LOL!!!!!!; sikkkkkkkkkkkkk i juss found this man out rite now and im lovein hez tunez

He doesn’t even have to be at a concert to hear the frenzied yelling of hundreds of admiring fans. I witnessed that when he came to UWI for this interview and I heard students screaming his name. “OMG is that Niky B???” (loud screams, loud screams, pause to go tell their friends, more screaming.) That was a trip. LOL. I guess he’s used to that. He was kind, gracious, open, funny, and overall just really pleasant. If this is how he is in the studio, no doubt he’s a producer’s dream: creative and easy to work with.

2010 looks great so far. Nicky B has collaborated with Chino, Laden, Chedda and Konshens on the Genius-produced “Fresh To Death”. His songs “Dance Like We’re Making Love/Suga Dumplin” , “Every Gal” (on the Russian’s G-Go Club Riddim), and “Try My Love” with Assassin AKA Agent Sasco are on frequent rotation on Jamaican radio.

Through not a culinary school graduate, Nicky B’s a chef of a different sort -cooking up mega hits in the studio. Pick a Nicky B song at random and most people have this to say: “da song ya bod!” Skibbi-di-boom-bang-beng. Nicky, take it to the world!

In the song I sing about how people think I’m born with a golden spoon in my mouth but never talk about how I lost my house and was left with one boxer, and rose from all of that to entertain people today. It talks about how I lost my adopted brother. It’s a very, very deep song. I actually shed a lot of tears writing it. It was the first time I was ever happy and sad all at once.

Being born with a gift is one thing. Recognizing and utilizing that gift to it’s full potential is another. That's just what Duane "D-Wayne" Howard is doing with his natural ability to manipulate word and sound with the parting of his lips. Ok. Well, the movement of his tongue, and vibrations of his voice box, and the expansion of his lungs and diaphragm....but let's not get technical here...lol. Duane was born in Brooklyn, New York to Jamaican parents on October 9th 1988. He demonstrated a talent for playing the drums and singing at age six. But it was football that was his main focus growing up. Music was always a part of his life though, and with roots planted firmly in Jamaica, Reggae was always in the mix.

Duane was inspired musically by the likes of Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder, surely a reflection of his American and Jamaican influence and culture. His parents have influenced his spiritual side by being examples that he has learned from, as he makes his journey to the top. His siblings and cousins have also contributed to his emotional side and all these influences come together to inspire his lyrics and melody.

As they say, variety is the spice of life and Duane was blessed with all the elements that make for a well- rounded artist. He is a versatile performer capable of captivating any audience with his electric brand of hip-hop, his smooth infectious brand of reggae and his sensual brand of R&B. Duane started singing in Church and eventually performed at talent shows, and school concerts. He has worked with producers such as Ed Robinson in New York, and Dr. Marshall in Jamaica.

Knowing the strength of his talent, Duane has declined requests by producers that he relegate himself to one genre. He does not want to be put in a box- a one-trick pony. Duane does not want to be known as Duane Howard the pop singer, or Duane Howard the R&B singer. No. He is Duane Howard the artist.

On and off stage, Duane is an extrovert exuding a warm personality and engaging smile. He sees himself as an approachable guy that can hang with just about anyone. Maybe that's why for him, his music is a personal connection between himself and his fans. After all he is offering them his life, his experiences, his story. Duane wants his music to be viewed as a coalescence of various experiences, times, emotions and moods that will pull on heartstrings of whoever is listening.

I'm listening. Are you??? Take some time to listen to his songs "I Just Wanna Dance" and "Towers (Make Love) below. Watch is video for "How She Like It" feat. Jr. Kelly.

Singer/songwriter Nhojj broke another barrier when his gay music video “Love” reached # 1 on MTV Music Top 100 chart. Last year Nhojj made OUTMusic Awards history when he became the first black male to win an OMA. The Alliance of LGBT Recording Artists & Performers voted his ballad “Love” 2009 OUTStanding R&B/Soul song of the year.

“Nhojj has been delivering high-quality jazzy soul for nearly a decade. Soul Sessions congratulates soul singer Nhojj for being a Black history and a gay history first!” – BET/Centric TV

“Congratulations on making history.” – The Advocate

“Love” appears on the Nhojj compilation “Love Songs” and the 2x Velocity nominated “Soul Comfort.” It features keyboardist Carl Evans (Stevie Wonder, Barry White); David Stark on Guitar (Rick James & Teena Marie); Tommy Aros on percussion (Luis Miguel); and is mastered by by Robert Honablue, whose Gold and Platinum credits include Santana, Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin, Bob Marley, and Miles Davis.

The official music video for “Love” was featured at 2010 Sundance Film Festival Queer Lounge, and is on MTV and VH1. Unlike current R&B music videos, it is the sensitive reflection of 2 male college students who feel a mutual attraction toward each other. Director Kirk Shannon-Butts spliced scenes from his highly acclaimed indie film "Blueprint,” which screened at 2008 Cannes International Film Festival, and footage of Nhojj as the angel of love. "I believe love is for everyone... homosexual and heterosexual" Nhojj explains, "One day soon our world will acknowledge this simple truth."

In 2004, Nhojj's sophomore CD “Someday Peace Love & Freedom” was nominated for OUTStanding New Male Recording, and won Best Musical Performance at the Homo Hip-Hop Poetry Jam Fresh Fruit Festival. Songs on that album covered issues ranging from homelessness to homophobia. Nhojj chose "Fighting for Love," an original composition about a warrior fighting against ignorance and hatred, to perform at that year's special OMA Nominee showcase.

Over the years Nhojj has contributed his gifts to MTV's Pos or not, ALSURA, Lifebeat (HIV/AIDS), Gay by God Campaign, Lesbian Domestic Violence, Drug Rehabilitation, National Disability Awareness, September 11th Concerts, THAW (Theaters Against War), Hiroshima-Nagasaki Commemoration, Earth Day Celebrations, Gay Prides and LGBT high school students.

In almost a decade of creating innovative music, Nhojj has released 6 CDs and an unplugged live DVD filmed by Emmy nominated director Bill Cote. He has performed at Lincoln Center, and toured the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and the United Kingdom.

Music from his 2001 debut “I've Been Waiting for You” was featured at the International Fringe Festival in the Award-winning play "The Making of the Black Man.” His 2005 gospel CD “John Martinborough Coming Home,” is a dedication to his mother, and features the work of Sam Archer (Barbershop Soundtrack). Last year, Nhojj released Karaoke Vol. 1 which includes the instrumental tracks to all his CDs.

Nhojj grew up in Guyana and Trinidad , where he performed for the Presidents of both countries. The son of a church minister, he began singing in church at the age of 5, but didn't embark on a career in music until after graduating from NYU with a BA in Economics. Nhojj stays connected to his Caribbean roots and has performed "Love" at the Barbados Music Awards and Guyana Fashion Weekend.

NY Carib News Entertainment Editor Walter Greene, host of GFW concluded “Nhojj is on the cusp of becoming a household name.”

Q&A

1. Can you describe your perfect day?
My perfect day would have to include creating music – I love writing and recording (especially harmonies). It would also have to include meditation, yoga and a good workout. I would want to get some reading done, preferably on a beach or by a fireplace. I'd have a great vocal and guitar practice session, enjoy some good Caribbean food and have a great conversation with good friends. And the most importantly I would be able to keep my thoughts focused on what is important and feel happy and content all day.

2. If you could have super human powers, what would they be and why?
Oh wow - I would be able to think things into existence – I could do a lot of good for myself and for this globe.

5. If you could spy on anyone who would it be and why?
I would want to spy on Nelson Mandela while he was in prison, because I would want to know what he did to stay motivated and inspired when there was no visible reason for hope. I want to know what he was thinking, cause that is where he changed South Africa and the world – he had to see it first in prison, before the world could see it.

6. What is the craziest thing you have done in the name of love?

When I first heard the song “Slip Away” by Nicola Lionfish I literally had chills all over. Seriously. Her voice is soft, yet it’s not fragile. There is strength in it that is comforting and intriguing at the same time. Of course I could not help but compare her to another strong sister Ms Erykah Badu. Yes, for the voice but also for the unconventional way she structures her songs. But don’t get it twisted, Nicola is her own person, and has her own unique sound.

I discovered her on MySpace which she has used to build a large fan base to whom she supplies a constant stream of culture reggae: uplifting, thought-provoking, emotion-stirring music. Facebook, You tube are other mediums Nicola is using to expand her reach. Based in Nassau, Bahamas Nicola has deliberately retained full control of her music as an independent artist despite repeated

approaches from music labels . Financing all her own releases, she has worked with producers from Jamaica and Europe and to date has released some 20 tracks.

Born to a Bahamian mother & German father, Nicola left her island home for Germany at a young age to seek independence and experience. Much of what she encountered taught her that life could be harsh. Living in a European country thousands of miles away from the home you know, where you have to speak another language and adapt to another culture while you are a teenager must not have been a walk in the park. The violence, prejudice, and poverty that she has had to overcome has enabled her to reach out with love and strength to those who are suffering. Her song “Slip Away” is hands down my favorite in her repertoire. It’s a song for any woman who feels she is less than, not pretty enough, cheated (not necessarily on), abandoned, or been hurt by a loved one. Nicola reaches out as a sister to her through lyrics such as “You are beautiful and your light shines bright/ that’s why he couldn’t see it…” and “Remember your happiness it comes before any other” … and “Empress you deserve only the best/if not better.” And Nicola does not just stop at speaking to the ladies;oh no. She effortlessly sends a strong message to the man who’s wronged them. “But the next time you see her coming/She’ll be walking looking like a movie star/ and when you go for her heart/ she’ll (Bredren she’ll) be gone, long gone/ Bet you wish you didn’t let a good one slip away.” Trust me, that song is so beautifully written. I highly recommend it for anyone going through a break-up.

There is no doubt that Nicola Lionfish has the gift of the pen. Recent songs like"Dear Artist", “Destination Unknown”, “Forgot to Tell You”, “Food for Thought” and her earlier works like “My Melody” Secret Love” “Universal Cry” “Sweet Mockingbird” are a testament to her writing prowess and if anything else, her growth as an artist. It’s no wonder radio stations and sound systems around the world have been clamouring to get a hold of her releases and dubplates. She has worked with producers such as Mystic Man of Sweden (“Destination Unknown”), Chop Chop Productions of Jamaica (“Turn”) , Holland’s Noteasyatall Productions (“Slip Away”) and Phar Far Food Palace Music from Denmark. Her video for 2009 video has been featured on many TV stations internationally, and fans are crying out for more.

Why? Because not only does she have a beautiful voice and is beautiful herself, but Nicola delivers to them songs with meaning. Good music is still alive and well guys!

She is a source of inspiration for many who struggle against violence, injustice and corrupt government. Just take a listen to her song “Destination Unknown” which speaks of the struggles and discrimination that Haitian’s face. “How is their life less than ours?” she implores, and begs those listening- “Enlighten me, I didn’t know there were different rules for our own kind.” I love the last line: "If you didn’t understand the first time, press repeat at the end of the song."

Please note that this song was not her first effort to show support to the people of Haiti, having sung about them long before the January 2010 earthquake. Nicola also supports and contributes financially to the Poor Man Movement, a grassroots community development project in Kwa Thema. South Africa.

Like the ocean waves that gently kiss the sands of her island home, Nicola’s clear voice, captivates all who it washes over. Her lyrics are full of strength, love, faith, hope and spirit. She has found new ways to interpret the Reggae sound. With her growing following of music lovers as well as industry interests there is no doubt Nicola Lionfish is truly a star on the rise.

Please take some time to learn more about her and listen to her wonderful songs.

Beautiful like the ocean, Strong like the coconut tree that gives it shade, quick like the fish that swims within…Nicola Lionfish you are The Lime Certified!

Q&A

1. I love your voice Nicola, I get an Erykah Badu vibe when I hear it. Do you get compared to other artists? How do you feel about such comparisons?
I rarely get compared to other artists, but if I do, then I’m always told that my vibration is similar to that of Erykah Badu. I am not offended by this in any way; but rather smitten/honored at the same time. Most of my supporters tell me that the reason they love my music is because I am different from the rest.

2. How have you been received locally?
Locally-No support. Why? A prophet is never honored in his own yard. Sad but true. One has to buss elsewhere before you receive support in your own country.

3. Do you have any reggae songs in German?
I don’t have any reggae songs in German. I have written and recorded German songs in the past. I plan to do a collabo in the near future with German-speaking artists. However, I wish to buss as an English-speaking artist. If I buss because of a German tune, ( initially) I will always be expected to produce German material.

4. When you moved to Germany what lessons did you learn on that journey?
I moved to Germany at a very young age on my own. Having to learn a new language from scratch, put myself through college and the saga goes on…That’s a chapter within itself. Most importantly on this journey, I found myself...

5. What is an ideal date with Nicola Lionfish?
LOL- I dont go on dates.

6. Have you ever had an embarrassing moment on stage?
Oh yeah. Lol. I think every artist, if honest, would say yes. Laughing hard. Everything that could go wrong went wrong. I still sang the song but afterwards I wished I could crawl underneath a rock and never come out. Now, I can smile about it because all these elements contribute towards your growth in life and in the music business. Lessons well learned.

7. These days it seems the more popular a female artist is the less clothes she has on. Are you ever filled with the urge to be more sexy?
NO Suh! I think women can be sexy with clothes on. To each its own… Who am I to judge any person? The focal point should be on the vocals and presentation and not on competing to see who could be more naked. Personally, I think those vibes should only be for behind closed doors—between you and your partner. What man wants a woman if the whole world has already seen what’s underneath the package? and of course.. Have some self respect!

8. Who are your top five artists for 2010 so far?
*Taurus Riley
* Queen Ifrica
* Pressure
*Jah Vinci
* Marcia Griffith

9. Do you have any tattoos?
I do. They were done before I began my trod; two—to be exact. I don’t need to describe them right? (smiling) They are hidden. If you can see them then that means you are too close… lol

10. What is your favorite:
Vacation spot: Still is and will always be Jamaica
Girl's name: Sayuri, Lilo & Amielle
TV shows: I dont watch much tv but if I do, its Discovery Channel & Cartoon Network
Book: The Geisha, Desert Flower by Waris Dirie, books from Gabriel Garcia Marquez
