Zerby Interview

Posted by Ayeola | 9:20 PM

What are the chances of a born and bred Midwestern female from a midwestern family becoming a reggae dancehall deejay? (Jamaican rapper) Pretty slim! But the story of Zerby is nothing short of sensational. With a lot of guts, determination and talent, she defied the odds and has proven that she can “bust a mic” just as well as a Jamaican yardie. She threw herself into a world of the unknown and learned the know-how, survived, and has become the next female deejay sensation. Zerby’s lyrics include a broad range of topics from make-you-move dancehall to cultural lyrics that exercise your brain.

Nicole Williams was born in Ludington, Michigan on August 28, 1978. She spent all of her childhood in a town called Hudsonville. While she growing up there, she learned how to master many musical instruments including the piano, trumpet and bass guitar.

While she was attending Central Michigan University as a music major, she met up with the “Ark” band, who she went out on the road with as their new found member. “I linked up with them one night and played all the trumpet lines with their trombone player.” They then asked me to go on the road with them and I accepted. I didn’t want to sit in school; I wanted to travel around.” So that she did. Nicole moved with the “Ark” band to Columbus, Ohio, and found herself traveling all over the midwest and south as the trumpet player for the band. But because of artistical differences between rival siblings that continuously tormented the band, Nicole decided to leave.

Soon after the split-up, she met the “Ark’s” ex-lead singer (before she was a member), Ras Shaggai, and decided to help him form a new band entitled, “Liviration.” Her membership lasted three years with the group. During that period several things changed in Nicole’s life. First, she relocated to Youngstown, Ohio. Then “Liviration” recorded their debut E.P. “Liviration Posse,” which was released by the “Conscious Vision” label. After a year of touring the midwest as the band’s keyboard player, “Liviration” members Zerby and Ras Shaggai decided to pack up and move to St. Croix. In St. Croix, they played many local clubs including the Moonraker in Christiansted, where they performed for a standing room-only crowd every weekend, as well as toured the U.S. and headlined such shows as the Detroit State Theater. Later, Nicole decided to venture out to Jamaica and seek out her long awaited love-Dancehall Deejaying.

On her own, with her new found identity ZERBY (a coined name give to Nicole by Ras Shaggai) booked her own studio time at the famous Penthouse Studios in Jamaica. She soon linked up with George from the Firehouse Crew and produced her own collaboration tune with DJ Easy Fresh entitled, “Culture Shock.” This was released on the C&G label and was distributed by the Tuff Gong music group. Next to follow was her second single “Mash Up,” which was released on the Firehouse label.

Zerby has worked with many producers such as Sly Dunbar, Steelie and Clevie, and Bobby Digital to name a few. She has performed with several sound systems in Jamaica and received an overwhelming response at Star Wave, Beach Bash, the Mirage nightclub and Godfathers Night Club in Kingston, Jamaica. She has shared the stage with deejay greats like Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Buju Banton, Spragga Benz and the great Beres Hammond.

In 2007, Zerby scored a spot on the movie soundtrack Mo starring Eric Per Sullivan (of Malcolm in the Middle fame) with her song “Boast.” She also had her hit single “Damage” featured on ABC’s Ugly Betty Television show episode entitled “A Tree Grows in Guadalajara.” There is no doubt that Zerby’s positive influence and talent is opening many doors for reggae music.

Zerby now has a catalogue of over 400 original songs. Please look out for Zerby's latest album Ready Now later this year!

Odds defier, talented writer, island lover...Zerby you are officially Lime certified!!!

Sophia Brown Interview

Posted by Ayeola | 10:55 PM

Beautiful, talented and extremely passionate about music would be the best way to describe the 5ft 3 dynamo vocalist who is Sophia Brown. She recently released her debut album "The Spotlight" this April. A full fledged performer by choice, Brown has been in the music business for over a decade and is still as persistent now as she once was. "I want to be the first female reggae artiste to win the coveted Grammy Award," she says.

Sophia got her introduction to the world of entertainment as a dancer and with her exceptional skills in choreography she created routines for songs by Dancehall pioneers Barrington Levy, Little John and Michael Palmer. Her talent as a singer came to the forefront after a progressive relationship with the Jamaica Tourist Board developed into her doing live performances on what was then called the Appleton Estate Tour.

Supported by her family and friends, Sophia left her St. Elizabeth home in 1988 to live in St. Catherine-a short distance away from the music capital of Kingston Jamaica. Her first break as a singer came with the Outta National produced single "Jig Mi." -a harmonious track that gave Sophia her very first local listenership on radio. Recognition of her vocal abilities soon followed and in no time she was off doing big shows performing on the same stage with top-rated reggae acts such as Shabba Ranks, Lady Patra, Frankie Paul, Richie Stephens and Doug E. Fresh.

By 1992 Sophia was performing at international music festivals such as Reggae Sunsplash in Montego Bay. That same year, a collaboration with the renowned Mad Professor from Europe flung open many doors for the singer and landed her recording projects across the globe starting with the Cayman Islands in 1995 where she voiced for Strawberry Records which later sold out to CMI Records. Securing a four-year, four-album deal with CMI, Sophia’s plans were soon dashed when the company crashed shortly after.

Undeterred, she stayed focused and managed to form an alliance called Music Mecka with Dale Dunkley. This production house was responsible for a host of singles released during that period, namely "Baby Tonight" and "Give it Up"-both of which enjoyed favorable airplay. In the years preceding Sophia took to the road and did several tours in and around the Tri-State area of New York, as well as Arizona and Virginia. She's been on stage with hip hop greats Snoop Dogg, Lil Kim, and Jah Rule to name a few.

Coming back home to Jamaica during summer 2007 Sophia decided to concentrate on recording and from this came her biggest single to date- "Love You Pure." It is a tasteful Reggae / R&B track inspired by the everyday problems that affect the typical romantic relationship. "That song came about one day when I was talking to a friend who was going though a few challenges in his personal life. After listening, I was inspired to write about what he was going through. It was a beautiful song that in the end captivated a lot of hearts, especially of those of people going through difficult times in their love life, and now it's like a Valentine's Day Classic!"A video of the single came shortly after and eventually the song climbed to #3 on the E STRIP Video Charts. 2008 ended with Brown forging numerous distribution deals from online music retailers such as Rhapsody.com, Apple iTunes and Sprint Music Downloads. Her second official single "I'm A Rose" produced by Cell Block/Music Mecka, captured the attention of her fans while she completed her ablum. The 14-track album of course incluides "Love You Pure," "Weak To You," "I'm A Rose," as well as collaborations with Macka Diamond ("Female Thing") and Junior Kelly ("Precious").

Sophia is one award nomination closer to her dreams of a Grammy. In Feb 2009 she was nominated for an Excellence In Music award inthe category Best New Female Artist. Like they say everything in it's time, and now is definitely time for Sophia to bask in the spotlight!

Multi-tasker....dancing diva....Sophia Brown you are officially Lime certified!

Q&A

1.How long have you been singing professionally?
I have been singing professionally for 17 years. It all started when I was introduced to a record company named Outta National from California, by my very good friend Steven Stanley. That was the label that produced for Gregory Issacs, Michael Rose and Anthony Red Rose. So I was in the studio with Steven one day and he hollered out "see Wonder Girl here (I was singing under that name at the time) put her on the track." I sang on the Jig Mi song and that's how it all started.

2.How do you balance motherhood and your career?
Well it has its challenges but I manage pretty well. Being a mother is like a job in itself , so when I am on the road I communicate a lot with my kids (a boy and a girl). I help my son with his homework over the phone and I make sure I talk to them twice a day. When I'm home its work and kids and everything in one, but I truly love both being an artist and being a mother. I wouldn't change a thing.

King Dice Interview

Posted by Ayeola | 7:19 PM

Some people just have talent. A simple statement.True. Powerful. Dennison Ikes Joseph has talent. He was born with it, he was blessed with it, he has embraced it and many can't deny it.

Dennison attended the Delice Primary School where his budding talent was recognized with the Best Actor award three years in a row. He also received the Student Of The Year award, at one point. After primary school he relocated to the city of Roseau to start his secondary school education at the St Mary's Academy. The talent in him spoke to other talented youth in Roseau and he became a member of the Klockerz Crew. Back then he sang Reggae and RnB. In 1999, Dennison took part in the Junior Monarch Calypso show and won! He also won Mr. St. Mary's Acadmey that same year.

The budding talent was growing and would soon blossom into the powerhouse we now know it to be. Dennison, by then known as Dice joined the most popular band in Dominica, WCK, as one of its lead vocalists. He recorded his breakthrough hit "Chance" with the band- a reggae ballad telling the story of a man pleading to his lover to give him another chance at proving his love. It is a song still popular today as it was 10 years ago.

In 2002, Dice entered the calypso scene once again, but this time on the big stage. Performing his self-written song "The Truth," he made it as far as the quarter finals that year. Undeterred, he returned in 2003, and made it to the finals, with two songs written by Pat Aaron, "Tarzan in the Jungle" and "Check Your Politicians", and captured the 3rd place position. The following year, 2004, he won his first crown with the songs "Peace Is My Business", dedicated to world leaders, and the second round crowd pleaser "Animal Farm," which compared politicians to various farm animals.

Dice now had a winning recipe for success: An accomplished writer in Pat Aaron, determined focus, and the ever present talent. So it was rather fitting that in 2005 when he returned to the stage he would no longer be known as Dice, but rather King Dice. Perhaps a sign that he was meant for this title which he again captured. Always the voice of the "ghetto youth" Dice spoke for them through his song "Help My Brother For Me” The political satire “Puppet Master" exposed the usual clamoring for power by those in power which was especially fitting as Dominica was embroiled in heated election debate.

On February 25th 2006, King Dice made history by becoming the third but youngest calypsonian in 30 years to win 3 calypso crowns in 3 consecutive years, accomplishing what many veteran calypsonians have yet been able to do. "These Are The Days" and "I Eh Fraid Of Them" were the two songs he performed that night. In July 2006, he became a member of the Elite- Tri Peat Club. Along with the other two calypsonians who have won 3 consecutive crowns he received his blue 3 peat jacket from the University of the West Indies in Dominica and Pawol Inc. In 2006 he released his 13 track debut CD entitled A Little Higher, co produced by himself and his writer Pat Aaron, consisting of all his calypsos from as far back as 2003, the ever popular “Chance,” "Hold On To Cricket", a song for cricket fans all over the Caribbean, urging them to have faith in the west Indies cricket team, and a few other party tunes.

The night of February 17th 2007, Dice was definitely the crowd favorite at Idol City (named after the first 3 peat calypso king) in Roseau where he performed "Lights" and "Follow Your Leader." He placed 4th out of nine other calypsonians. Not breaking from the recipe that secured his prior wins, Dice with the help of Pat Aaron came back a year later to capture the crown with "Roll The Dice And See" and "On My Own," remaining the youngest and ONLY calypsonian to win four national crowns and five consecutive road march titles ("Tarzan"-2003, "Animal Farm-2004, "Puppet Master"-2005, "I Eh Fraid"-2006 and "Lights"-2007).

During October/November 2008 Dominica celebrated it's 30th anniversary of Independence, and it seemed Dice was every where-performing at the Official opening, at various fetes, Creole In The Park and World Creole Music Festival. Many were anticipating his songs for the upcoming carnival season, so it was a shock when he announced his withdrawal from the competition. This was the subject of debate throughout the island-in all media, and even with Dominicans abroad. Not one to forget his fans, he did perform his string of hits at Harlem Plaza on Feb. 19th 2009, and performed for the first time his latest release "To Kick". As for Carnival 2010 it remains to be seen if Dice will return to whet the appetite of his eager fans. As many people who may not like him, you will hardly hear a bad word about his performances. There goes that undeniable talent again! He made headlines in April 2009, not for music but for a skirmish with local police, and will be going to court this week on that matter.

King Dice is presently contracted as the face of Heineken Beer in Dominica. He has received several awards for his accomplishments in the calypso arena including A Young Achievers Award in 2004 from the Commonwealth of Dominica Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs, Sports and Human Resource Development for his contribution to culture. He also received in 2006 a Youth Ambassador Award from the National Youth Council of Dominica in recognition of his contribution to calypso art form and for his 3-peat achievement. King Dice has taken part in workshops and forums on the island, with several groups including the Optimist Club who's main focus is youth development. He has performed regionally in Barbados, Antigua, St Lucia, St Maarten, Tortola, St. Thomas and the French island of Guadeloupe, and internationally in the United States (New York, New Jersey, Houston) Canada, and England. In May 2009 he performed in the World Cup Of Calypso in St. Maarten along with current Dominica Calypso Monarch Karessah. Both qualified for the next round in Barbados in November this year.

King Dice is a proud parent. A mouthpiece of the poor and suffering. A leader to the "Ghetto Youth' He lives on planet earth with the goal of sharing his talent with the world. He has conquered calypso. What next? Hollywood? As they say talent can only get you so far and for King Dice I guess, that's the top of the world!

Talented performer, focused entertainer.....King Dice you are Lime certified!

marie-claire Interview

Posted by Ayeola | 7:53 PM

So I returned home during the Independence season last year which was chock-full of activities. On such event was Belmont Lounge hosted by marie-claire at Symzee's -a local spot known for Jazz on a Thursday night. I did an impromptu performance and marie-claire complemented my singing. She was so sweet, humble and just so encouraging! It seems after that night we just kept running into each other and as fate would have it, I am compelled to let the world know about this gem of a talent local to Dominica and no stranger to the world stage.

marie-claire was born in Roseau, Commonwealth of Dominica, West Indies and raised in The Bronx, New York. She began singing while studying Archaeology in her senior year at Brooklyn College, when she performed at an open mike night at the Village Vanguard. The very next day marie-claire and her best friend left for Texas where she spent a year and a half performing on the jazz and country western circuit. She attended a performance of Mozart’s, Don Giovanni and was inspired to pursue a career in opera.

Undaunted by remarks of the extensive training involved, marie-claire embarked on her latest endeavor. Eight months to the year, while working in the classical music department at the Austin Tower Records, marie-claire was approached by the musical director of the Austin Lyric Opera Company who overheard her singing to La Boheme. After only two auditions marie-claire became a member of the Austin Lyric Opera Company. She completed the season and began her full time study of opera, at the Conservatory of Santa Cecelia in Rome, Italy where she lived for three years. Her return to the states took her through Los Angeles, where she continued her study, and then back to New York where she studied with Raymond Buckingham.

The connection with Mr. Buckingham led to two performances at Carnegie Hall with the New York Grand Opera Company. She also studied with Wayne Saunders of Opera Ebony, performing in several recitals in the New York City area. She has been featured in The City section of the Sunday New York Times, performed at Joe’s Pub, Lyricist Lounge-Central Park Summer Stage 2001, Siren, Izzy Bar, and Lot 61 to name a few. She has performed at the . Annual Hip-Hop Film Festival (November 2002) and Bounce at The Bronx Museum of The Arts. marie-claire has been featured in the films, Lovin Jezebel and The Roommate and part of the cast of the second season of The Chappelle Show on Comedy Central. She has also graced her amazing voice on DJ Logic’s Album, The Anomaly. marie-claire’s passion is to seamlessly blend opera and hip-hop, as she finds the two genres covering the same themes with their highly dramatic lyrics. CNN said, “She is the real Hip-Hopera, hearing is believing!

In 2005 marie-claire was featured in the 2nd season of the Dave Chappelle Show on Comedy Central. Marie-claire has also graced the pages of local magazine Domnitjen and regional magazine, “Liat’s Island Where”. She performed at Dominica’s State House, the solo recital:’ A Night at the Opera’, at Jazzwalk singing the classic jazz standards of George Gershwin and Cole Porter and at Cable&Wireless,”Creole in the Park” doing hip-hopera. During that year, marie-claire co-created, co-produced & hosted video best- the first ever video music show in Dominicaa. Locally produced, it served as a platform for local artists.

2006 was equally busy for marie-claire. She headlined with artists such as Morgan Heritage, Richie Spice and Barrington Levy in Dominica as part of Nature Fest and in St. Lucia as part of Love Fest. marie-claire 's love of film inspired her to form her own production company, girlfullofgold productions ltd., a local company whose directive is bringing the stories of the region to light through the art forms of film, music videos & live TV. marie-claire also had two live TV shows in Dominica, jazzlive, which featured the best jazz musicians on the island including marie claire and belemont lounge which featured reggae, dancehall, hip-hop and r&b. Both shows were geared towards providing local artists with a platform to express themselves through their art, and both were aired live on Sat TV and Q95, which stream world wide. marie-claire was also featured on WCK 2006 cd release, the track entitled, ‘Hustlin’.

In 2007 marie-claire sang for heads of state from all over the world, including Hillary Rodham Clinton.

marie-claire visited Jamaica in 2008 for stints at Christopher’s Jazz Café, Weekenz & Red Bones Blues Café to rave revues.

marie-claire kicked off an equally busy 2009 with a performance at the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival in Montego Bay. She still has three albums to record, opera, jazz and the evolution continues, her tour of her show, ‘Opera Goes To The Movies’ across the Caribbean and plenty of live performances. Da'Ville Interview

Posted by Ayeola | 7:54 PM

The first of seven children, Da'Ville was born Orville Thomas on January 24th 1978 in Kingston Jamaica. His father Nkrumah Thomas was a dub artist and producer in the late 70s and early 80s, who influenced him to write his first single. Da'Ville spent most of his childhood under the watchful eye of his grandmother who ensured that he attended church and sang in the choir. While still a member of the St.Peter Claver Church Choir, Da'Ville also joined his high school choir, singing at morning devotions and even then developing his vocals and whetting his appetite for performing.

After graduating from Norman Manly Comprehensive High School, Da'Ville worked as a store clerk, still clinging to the dream of having a successful career as a musician. He tried several times to create boy groups which at the time was the popular route (think 112, Boyz II Men). He eventually joined ARP (A Raw Perspective) with four other young men, performing at talent shows and eventually recording songs like "Lion Sleeps Tonight", which made it big in Jamaica and Europe, "Life"( Da'Ville features prominently on this track) "Missing you", "Heaven on Earth" performed with Beenie Man on the album Many Moods of Moses, and "Why Me Lord" performed with Shaggy on his platinum album Hot Shot

In 2001 Da'Ville signed a solo deal with Penthouse Records, under the management of Donovan Germanine. He recorded hits like "Cruzin" "Love Will Show Me The Way" and "All My Life" (originally performed by Aaron Neville) featuring then label mate Marcia Griffiths. The song was nominated for a 2001 Reggae Soca Award.

After leaving Penthouse he continued to record hit singles for several producers such as J.Brown, Fire Links, Stephen "Di Genius" McGregor, Don Corleon, Preston Anfoy, Wee-Pow (Stone Love), Beres Hammond, Robert Livingston (Big Yard Music).

His debut album In Heaven (Fashozy Records) was released in Japan by Avex Entertainment Group. Not only did the album feature his vocal and writing talents, it showcased Da'Ville's production skills. The album made it to the top ten best selling records of 2005 for Tower Records (Japan) leading to tours throughout the country and back home in the Caribbean.

The following year Avex released the album Can't Get Over You, also produced by Da'Ville and J.Brown for Fashozy Records. The title track "Can't Get Over You" as well as the hit single "On My Mind" and "This Time I Promise" solidified his reputation as "Big Bad Singer". Moreover, they featured prominently on several charts and compilations. "Can't Get Over You" was a top ten reggae hit in Jamaica and was the top of the charts in Aruba, #2in New York and was on VP Records' Reggae Gold 2006. “On My Mind,” held the 1 position on several charts including Jamaica (5 weeks), New York (3 weeks), Florida, Europe and Africa. Da'Ville even got a write up in the New York Times after a wicked performance in early October. He rounded off a very successful 2006 with his honor as Stone Love's “Singer Of The Year."

On My Mind (VPRecords) was his 2007 release featuring chart-toppers such as “On My Mind” and “Cant Get Over You” as well as “This Time I Promise”(featured on Strictly The Best vol. 38)and “Dancehall Lovers Rock.” In spring of the same year, after an extensive European tour, Da’Ville made several appearances in North America. He performed at The Best of The Best Concert in Florida and the 26th International Reggae & World Music Awards held at the Apollo Theatre, where he was nominated in several categories and won Most Improved Entertainer for 2006. In addition, Da’Ville made a special guest appearance at Madison Square Garden and he also performed at Irie Jamboree V before leaving for yet another Japan and Caribbean tour. That same year "Always On My Mind" was remixed with Sean Paul, leading to more recognition for the song for which they won the Best Reggae Vocal Performance award at the First Annual Reggae Awards on Sunday February 24th 2008.

Not forgetting his early success in Japan, Da'Ville paid homage with the release of Ichiban (which means "number one" in Japanese) on December 12th 2008. Da'Ville toured extensively in Japan promoting the album and even got a clothing deal with Nike who dressed him while on his Japanese promo blitz. I guess the move paid off because "Ichiban" became the number one downloaded single in Japan soon after its release.

In 2009, Da'Ville teamed up with several prominent Jamaican artists to promote Shaggy's Save a Life concert held Jan 3rd-appearing on the song "Save A Life." The concert raised money for the Bustamante Children's Hospital. Da'Ville has started off 2009 on strong footing with his hits "Never Gonna Cry" and "Missing You Right Now" which are climbing up the charts and in constant rotation on radio as well as TV.

Da'Ville continues to tour the world promoting his music. He sings from the heart, songs of love, heartbreak and forgiveness- all part of any relationship. Ladies love him, but so do the guys who I'm sure consider him a mouthpiece. No doubt, there are nuff guys who've played "Yesterday" to their ladies or "Missing You" to mend a rift in their relationship. Check out his official site or MySpace page to keep up with his heavy tour schedule and updates on his career.

Etana Interview

Posted by Ayeola | 10:53 AM

Had she stuck to her guns and became a nurse, maybe the lucky staff and patients and a Florida hospital or doctor's office would be privy to the clear, powerful and heavenly voice of this week's interviewee. Well thank God that didn't happen! Etana took a leap of faith and pursued a career as an artist and hasent looked back since!!!!

She was born Shauna McKenzie in the hillside community of August Town situated in the South Eastern side of Jamaica. The only daughter of a fairly large family of boys, she attended school locally up until 1992 when she migrated to Miami Florida.

It was while studying at Broward Community College, Etana's passion for music heightened and she delved into creating new sounds from a host of genres she had embraced over the years, including Reggae, Pop, Hip Hop and Jazz. Her first attempt to make music a career was in 2000 when she prematurely exited college and joined the girl group GIFT. She played her part (you know every girl in a group as a role right, just check Destiny's Child) but it just wasn't her to have this uber sexy diva image. And her strength shone through. She quit- on the set of their lead single video no less. Oprah would say she had an "ah-ha" moment.

She went back home to Jamaica, the land of her birth, the place that could let her be whatever she determined she wanted to be, the land of second chances. But she had to keep it real now, so she started an Internet Cafe- most musicians starting off have a 9-5, eh. In 2005 that 2nd chance finally came when a friend took her to Fifth Element Records and she auditioned to be Richie Spice's back up singer. Of course she was hired on the spot (dis gyal can saaang) and went on tour.

Her first hit "Wrong Address" was created while on tour with Spice's band, while in the studio with the percussionist and guitar player. Such a simple song, with great imagery and moving lyrics, it was no surprise that in 2006 the tune was on airways all over the globe. After that was her next single "Roots"- as equally stirring. Just look at the chorous : "Yuh cyan water down and dilute/Yuh cyan hide de trut from de yutes/ yuh can steal de fruit not the root/cause di yutes a hol dem roots."

She continues to use her music to impress on all who listen the need to see women as royal, as naturally beautiful and at the same time strong and powerful. She speaks of poverty, and social oppression as well. The beauty of it all is that though she speaks of serious issues, the music and melodies are so captivating that people let down all barriers and embrace the message and the music.

Etana has performed around the globe and in her beloved Jamaica at festivals such as Reggae Sumfest, Fully Loaded, ATI Live Concert, Irie Jamboree, Welcome to Jamrock and Guinness Sting, and Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival. In 2008 she performed at the Olympic Grand Gala for the Jamaican Beijing Atheletes and the Reggaelution concert in December of the same year.

She has garnered awards such as Best Female Vocalist at both the Excellence in Music & Entertainment (EME) Awards and the IRIE FM Radio Awards, for Best Solo Female Reggae Vocalist copped at the 1st annual Reggae Academy Awards for which she had nominations in 3 separate categories. Her debut album “The Strong One” which won the coveted “Album Of The Year” Award at the 2009 EME Awards. This Sunday while performing in Dominica she won Best Female Vocalist and Best Album at the 28th International Reggae And World Music Awards (IRAWMA) in New York.

Tune in toher new website www.etanastrongone.com to check out her new singles "Caltariba System", “Free” and "Blessings (ft. Alborosie)"as well as some old favorites!

Jah Cure Interview

Posted by Ayeola | 2:44 PM

I remember in High School, my Religion teacher (went to Catholic school, big up Convent High) had this inner glow, its like she was always in that feel good mood. When I see Jah Cure perform, it's the same thing. He just has this inner joy that radiates and touches everyone around him.

Born on October 11, 1978 in Hanover Jamaica, the young boy who would touch the world with his melodious voice was always mesmerized by the pull of music. He would sneak out of his home and visit the dancehalls and various shows in the community, being influenced by and learning from performers such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Beres Hammond, Marcia Griffith, Garnett Silk, Yami Bolo, Jacob Miller and Black Uhuru. So it was not strange that by age 11he had already chosen the name Little Melody and was performing in his community and school.

School days seemed fun for Siccaturie and one memory that stood out from those days surrounded his name. Not everyone could say Siccaturie. He remembers teachers asking him to spell his name, so much so that he would run around the school yard singing S-I-C-C-A-T-U-R-I-E. Most people just called him Sicca for short.

By age 15, Sica/ Little Melody moved to Kingston, where he met Capleton, Sizzla and Jah Mason. It was at this stage in his life that he was given the name Jah Cure by Capleton and his David House Crew. According to his MySpace bio it was because the singer looked young and healthy, and he was “well preserved,” as in “well cured” from using the plants of the land. Cure became enlightened spiritually, and his belief in living naturally became heightened.

It was during that period he encountered Beres Hammond who was so struck with his voice and talent that he took him under his wing and took him on tour. In 1998, Cure performed on a European tour and visited several Caribbean Islands with Hammond and the Harmony House Family, touching thousands of fans and defining himself as a definite talent and star!

Unfortunately , and unexpectedly, towards the end of 1998 he was stopped and arrested late one night in Montego Bay. His official bio states on the issue Cure was charged with four crimes, all of which he denied. He has maintained his innocence to this day, as he did all through his arrest, trial and incarceration. A non-jury trial was convened, where Cure’s defense lawyer based his case on “Identification vs. Recognition” case law. Failure by his attorney to file a timely appeal, regrettably, based on one victim’s claim that he sounded like one of the perpetrators, Cure was sentenced in 1999 to 15 years in prison.

While in jail, Cure recorded and released several records, many of which topped the charts as 1 singles. The songs “Jamaica” produced by Danger Zone Productions and “Longing For” produced by Don Carleon both hit 1 on the Jamaican charts and were international hits. His first album Free Jah’s Cure was recorded in jail, and later released in 2001, one year after his incarceration. It is a project that has been lyrically compared to Bob Marley’s classic, Exodus.

In 2003, Beres Hammond produced Cure’s second album Ghetto Life, which featured the single “Divide and Rule,” a duet with Sizzla, which was voted the best song of that year. Cure recorded more songs while still incarcerated and released his third album in 2005, aptly entitled Freedom Blues. Eventually, after serving eight years in jail, Cure was released from prison on July 28, 2007. His fourth album, Reflections, was released one week later. Since his release from jail, his goal has been to spread love and to promote peace and healing, universally through his music. He began his world wide tour in the Fall of 2008.

Cure’s fifth full-length album The Universal Cure is his first recorded album since his release from prison. The project is scheduled for worldwide release on April 14th, 2009, and the single “Mr. Jailer,” featuring SoBe label-mate Phyllisia is the first of many exciting collaborations for Jah Cure. The album contains appearances from various artists crossing the Reggae, Hip Hop, Latin, and R&B genres.

Klass Money Interview

Posted by Ayeola | 11:06 PM

Allu know I could not let my first-week-grand-launch of my site pass and without featuring a Dominican artist right????? Of course you did. LOL..... And guess what it's not a Bouyon artist or Zouk or Calypso artist either. He's a rapper. Uh huh....

He is Klass Money and he's focused on making it in this rap game-ya dig? He grew up first in the city of Roseau and then moved to the suburb of Wallhouse about age 6. He says growing up in D.A (that's short for Dominica) " was fun, interesting, memorable. I was always a troublesome dude. I guess it was due to the fact that I was young." The young Klass Money hung with a click called Outlaws, then with 24 Style, but not too long after hooking up with the later he moved to Miami. Looking back he says "I think it was for my own good, guess that's why my mom made sure I moved ASAP (laughs).

When it came to music, he says he was more into reggae a la Buju Banton. He got his first taste of rap music, after friends introduced him to 2Pac and it was love at first listen. Interestingly enough, rapping for him was just a hobby, but after developing a fan base, working with producers around the globe and seeing the interest that others had in his music, he began considering it as a career.

KlassMoney is currently working on his 2000 N Mine street album- his 3rd solo project due out this summer. You can download his 2nd Period Klass In Session mixtape on his MySpacePage.
Klass Money is currently managed by 3D Sound Management Inc and he says "I got a few record labels interested in me so it's on and popping!"

Interesting update. So here I am typing up this interview, and I realized I never asked for his real name, so I was like dude, what's your name. So he's like Jefferson Scotland. LOL!!!!! That's my cousin ya'll!!! Our grandmothers are sisters!!!! Is that crazy or what????? Guess I missed the little innocent face I once knew under that beard and dem dreads. Now he have his game face on. So now I'm even happier that I am not only bigging up a Dominican but a family member too. Big ups to Jewo (his Dad) and Carol (his mama, ooh he looks like her too) your sisters and the rest of the fam.
