Nicholas Bennett is a studio baby. The studio? Grafton Studios in Vineyard Town. The famous parent? His father, internationally-renowned songwriter and music producer, Mikey Bennett. It’s no surprise then that from an early age Nicholas encountered Jamaican Reggae stalwarts like Shabba Ranks, Maxi Priest and Beenie Man on the regular. Internationally renowned artists, such as Roberta Flack and Cyndi Lauper, have worked in the studio and of course he was there absorbing a wealth of information from these incredibly talented entertainers. Under the tutelage of his father, Nicky was encouraged to become a studio engineer; and over the years he developed a sound he calls R&D (Rhythm & Dancehall). It was a marriage between the Jamaican sounds of Reggae and Dancehall and American Pop and R&B. Artists such as R. Kelly, Marvin Gaye and Craig David stand out in his list of musical influences.
A year after leaving high school, his family’s home was destroyed by fire. Nicky B reflects, “ I didn’t want to do anything or see anyone.” The ordeal prompted him to reassess his life, and it was at that pivotal moment he decided to put aside his dream of becoming a chef and devote his time to working in the studio as an engineer. At a recording session with Beenie Man, 17 year-old Nicky hummed what was to become the hook on the track “This is What it Feels Like.” At the insistence of the King of Dancehall, the shy engineer acquiesced and recorded the hook. As they say, the rest is history. Nicky B was officially on the music scene and hasn’t looked back since.
After scoring a handful of hits in Jamaica the ‘Young Prince of Dancehall’ embarked on a five-city tour of Japan in 2004. “The audiences in Japan responded positively to my music. I felt good,” he relates. “I knew that I was on to something and this made me feel I was heading in the right direction.” No doubt, even Japanese Kickboxer Yassuhiro Kido is a fan. In his K-1 World Max match on April 21st 2009 versus South Korea’s Soo Hwan Lee, he entered the arena to Beenie Man’s “King of the Dancehall and Nicky B’s “Wanna Be Your Man (All I Want)”. How serendipitous, the King and Young Prince of Dancehall together again! (See it HERE, Nicky B comes on at 2:26)
Nicky B has shared the stage with Lil Zane, and Kanye West –thanks to his sister, music video director Kimala Bennett. Back in 2007 he entertained 50,000 screaming fans at Germany’s Summerjam, and to date has performed at a number of events in Jamaica. I was on hand to see him at Tarrus Riley and Friends in Dec 2009 where he shared the stage with Reggae music’s current stars like Chino McGregor, I-Octane, Queen Ifrica and Duane Stephenson and legends like Freddie McGregor and Jimmy Riley.
Over the years, Nicky B has been featured on some of Dancehall’s most catchy and popular riddims including DreamWeaver Riddm ("The Way We Roll") Mad Guitar Riddm (“She Nuh Ready Yet”), Chiney K Riddim (“High”), Chandelier Riddm ("Rain or Fall”), Bubble Up Riddim (“Wanna Be Your Man”), Golden Gate Riddim (“Anybody Out There”), Guardian Angel Riddim (Best Friends) , Pelaean Riddm (“Ready for Love”), European Swing Riddim (“Single Ladies”), Fitz Riddim (“Ms. Nuclear”) Thrilla Riddim (“Stop My Flo”), and Higher Octane Riddim (“Give It Away” with Shane-O). I couldn’t help but list so many…as one person commented on his you tube video’s respect for nicky, always choosing the best riddims and makin amazing musique.
Oh la, la; and speaking of la musique, you should know that being from l’ile de la Dominique, land of cadance and World Creole Music Festival, I just fell in love with his sound when I heard Nicky singing on a zouk love riddim. Listen the song “Let The Music” (see video below) and you just might. He has collaborated on other zouk love songs like “For Real” with Samantha Nourry, and “Rude Bwoy Love” with Naelle. He even hasFrench Pop ("Hypnotise" with Parisa), Kompa (“Give You Love”) and French Lovers Rock (“Never Leave” with Goldee) songs in his repertoire. Nicky B has added his unique R&D flavour to songs by notable French Dancehall artists like Fefe Typical, (“Baby Girl”), Lord Kossity (Stand Up”, “Hotel Room”, Gangsta Girl) Fenomen 10 Gla (“Dirty Wine”) and Zorro Chang (“If You Came”) ensuring a wide fan base in the French speaking world and that of non-French speakers who just like the music. Someone commented on You Tube: his voice is soooo freaking sexxyyy lol...is he haitian???? I guess he could take that as a compliment huh.
Though the songs on his current R&D project were recorded in various cities around the world (Paris, Belgium, Los Angeles, Kingston) one theme remains the same, “I’m a hopeless romantic so a lot of the songs are about love and the enjoyment of life. Women relate to my lyrics. I write what they want to hear from men.” Number one song on my list is “Sweet Little Addiction” produced by Konvict (as in Akon’s Konvict??? Yes the very)--Peep the video below.
“Computer Love”, “ “Forever” (Forever Riddim), “I Only Want to Love You”, and “Care About You” are songs clearly written for the ladies. And they show him mad love online: nicky b's voice is sooo melodic... u have to love anything he sings... wow!, hee'sss soooo sexiiii..i wanna meet him..and his voice is amazing; Man dis dude is wicked n wicked sexy LOL!!!!!!; sikkkkkkkkkkkkk i juss found this man out rite now and im lovein hez tunez
He doesn’t even have to be at a concert to hear the frenzied yelling of hundreds of admiring fans. I witnessed that when he came to UWI for this interview and I heard students screaming his name. “OMG is that Niky B???” (loud screams, loud screams, pause to go tell their friends, more screaming.) That was a trip. LOL. I guess he’s used to that. He was kind, gracious, open, funny, and overall just really pleasant. If this is how he is in the studio, no doubt he’s a producer’s dream: creative and easy to work with.
2010 looks great so far. Nicky B has collaborated with Chino, Laden, Chedda and Konshens on the Genius-produced “Fresh To Death”. His songs “Dance Like We’re Making Love/Suga Dumplin” , “Every Gal” (on the Russian’s G-Go Club Riddim), and “Try My Love” with Assassin AKA Agent Sasco are on frequent rotation on Jamaican radio.
Through not a culinary school graduate, Nicky B’s a chef of a different sort -cooking up mega hits in the studio. Pick a Nicky B song at random and most people have this to say: “da song ya bod!” Skibbi-di-boom-bang-beng. Nicky, take it to the world!

5. What song describes your life right now?
“Hustle Hard” is a new song of mine. Produced by my little brother, it speaks about my entire life- coming up and dealing with misconceptions of the world. A lot of people believe that there is this road nice and paved because of my father. In the song I sing about how people think I’m born with a golden spoon in my mouth but never talk about how I lost my house and was left with one boxer, and rose from all of that to entertain people today. It talks about how I lost my adopted brother. It’s a very, very deep song. I actually shed a lot of tears writing it. It was the first time I was ever happy and sad all at once.

Being born with a gift is one thing. Recognizing and utilizing that gift to it’s full potential is another. That's just what Duane "D-Wayne" Howard is doing with his natural ability to manipulate word and sound with the parting of his lips. Ok. Well, the movement of his tongue, and vibrations of his voice box, and the expansion of his lungs and diaphragm....but let's not get technical here...lol. Duane was born in Brooklyn, New York to Jamaican parents on October 9th 1988. He demonstrated a talent for playing the drums and singing at age six. But it was football that was his main focus growing up. Music was always a part of his life though, and with roots planted firmly in Jamaica, Reggae was always in the mix.
Duane was inspired musically by the likes of Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder, surely a reflection of his American and Jamaican influence and culture. His parents have influenced his spiritual side by being examples that he has learned from, as he makes his journey to the top. His siblings and cousins have also contributed to his emotional side and all these influences come together to inspire his lyrics and melody.
As they say, variety is the spice of life and Duane was blessed with all the elements that make for a well- rounded artist. He is a versatile performer capable of captivating any audience with his electric brand of hip-hop, his smooth infectious brand of reggae and his sensual brand of R&B. Duane started singing in Church and eventually performed at talent shows, and school concerts. He has worked with producers such as Ed Robinson in New York, and Dr. Marshall in Jamaica.
Knowing the strength of his talent, Duane has declined requests by producers that he relegate himself to one genre. He does not want to be put in a box- a one-trick pony. Duane does not want to be known as Duane Howard the pop singer, or Duane Howard the R&B singer. No. He is Duane Howard the artist.
On and off stage, Duane is an extrovert exuding a warm personality and engaging smile. He sees himself as an approachable guy that can hang with just about anyone. Maybe that's why for him, his music is a personal connection between himself and his fans. After all he is offering them his life, his experiences, his story. Duane wants his music to be viewed as a coalescence of various experiences, times, emotions and moods that will pull on heartstrings of whoever is listening.
I'm listening. Are you??? Take some time to listen to his songs "I Just Wanna Dance" and "Towers (Make Love) below. Watch is video for "How She Like It" feat. Jr. Kelly.

Singer/songwriter Nhojj broke another barrier when his gay music video “Love” reached # 1 on MTV Music Top 100 chart. Last year Nhojj made OUTMusic Awards history when he became the first black male to win an OMA. The Alliance of LGBT Recording Artists & Performers voted his ballad “Love” 2009 OUTStanding R&B/Soul song of the year.
“Nhojj has been delivering high-quality jazzy soul for nearly a decade. Soul Sessions congratulates soul singer Nhojj for being a Black history and a gay history first!” – BET/Centric TV
“Congratulations on making history.” – The Advocate
“Love” appears on the Nhojj compilation “Love Songs” and the 2x Velocity nominated “Soul Comfort.” It features keyboardist Carl Evans (Stevie Wonder, Barry White); David Stark on Guitar (Rick James & Teena Marie); Tommy Aros on percussion (Luis Miguel); and is mastered by by Robert Honablue, whose Gold and Platinum credits include Santana, Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin, Bob Marley, and Miles Davis.
The official music video for “Love” was featured at 2010 Sundance Film Festival Queer Lounge, and is on MTV and VH1. Unlike current R&B music videos, it is the sensitive reflection of 2 male college students who feel a mutual attraction toward each other. Director Kirk Shannon-Butts spliced scenes from his highly acclaimed indie film "Blueprint,” which screened at 2008 Cannes International Film Festival, and footage of Nhojj as the angel of love. "I believe love is for everyone... homosexual and heterosexual" Nhojj explains, "One day soon our world will acknowledge this simple truth."
In 2004, Nhojj's sophomore CD “Someday Peace Love & Freedom” was nominated for OUTStanding New Male Recording, and won Best Musical Performance at the Homo Hip-Hop Poetry Jam Fresh Fruit Festival. Songs on that album covered issues ranging from homelessness to homophobia. Nhojj chose "Fighting for Love," an original composition about a warrior fighting against ignorance and hatred, to perform at that year's special OMA Nominee showcase.
Over the years Nhojj has contributed his gifts to MTV's Pos or not, ALSURA, Lifebeat (HIV/AIDS), Gay by God Campaign, Lesbian Domestic Violence, Drug Rehabilitation, National Disability Awareness, September 11th Concerts, THAW (Theaters Against War), Hiroshima-Nagasaki Commemoration, Earth Day Celebrations, Gay Prides and LGBT high school students.
In almost a decade of creating innovative music, Nhojj has released 6 CDs and an unplugged live DVD filmed by Emmy nominated director Bill Cote. He has performed at Lincoln Center, and toured the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and the United Kingdom.
Music from his 2001 debut “I've Been Waiting for You” was featured at the International Fringe Festival in the Award-winning play "The Making of the Black Man.” His 2005 gospel CD “John Martinborough Coming Home,” is a dedication to his mother, and features the work of Sam Archer (Barbershop Soundtrack). Last year, Nhojj released Karaoke Vol. 1 which includes the instrumental tracks to all his CDs.
Nhojj grew up in Guyana and Trinidad , where he performed for the Presidents of both countries. The son of a church minister, he began singing in church at the age of 5, but didn't embark on a career in music until after graduating from NYU with a BA in Economics. Nhojj stays connected to his Caribbean roots and has performed "Love" at the Barbados Music Awards and Guyana Fashion Weekend.
NY Carib News Entertainment Editor Walter Greene, host of GFW concluded “Nhojj is on the cusp of becoming a household name.”

1. Can you describe your perfect day?
My perfect day would have to include creating music – I love writing and recording (especially harmonies). It would also have to include meditation, yoga and a good workout. I would want to get some reading done, preferably on a beach or by a fireplace. I'd have a great vocal and guitar practice session, enjoy some good Caribbean food and have a great conversation with good friends. And the most importantly I would be able to keep my thoughts focused on what is important and feel happy and content all day.

When I first heard the song “Slip Away” by Nicola Lionfish I literally had chills all over. Seriously. Her voice is soft, yet it’s not fragile. There is strength in it that is comforting and intriguing at the same time. Of course I could not help but compare her to another strong sister Ms Erykah Badu. Yes, for the voice but also for the unconventional way she structures her songs. But don’t get it twisted, Nicola is her own person, and has her own unique sound.
I discovered her on MySpace which she has used to build a large fan base to whom she supplies a constant stream of culture reggae: uplifting, thought-provoking, emotion-stirring music. Facebook, You tube are other mediums Nicola is using to expand her reach. Based in Nassau, Bahamas Nicola has deliberately retained full control of her music as an independent artist despite repeated
Born to a Bahamian mother & German father, Nicola left her island home for Germany at a young age to seek independence and experience. Much of what she encountered taught her that life could be harsh. Living in a European country thousands of miles away from the home you know, where you have to speak another language and adapt to another culture while you are a teenager must not have been a walk in the park. The violence, prejudice, and poverty that she has had to overcome has enabled her to reach out with love and strength to those who are suffering. Her song “Slip Away” is hands down my favorite in her repertoire. It’s a song for any woman who feels she is less than, not pretty enough, cheated (not necessarily on), abandoned, or been hurt by a loved one. Nicola reaches out as a sister to her through lyrics such as “You are beautiful and your light shines bright/ that’s why he couldn’t see it…” and “Remember your happiness it comes before any other” … and “Empress you deserve only the best/if not better.” And Nicola does not just stop at speaking to the ladies;oh no. She effortlessly sends a strong message to the man who’s wronged them. “But the next time you see her coming/She’ll be walking looking like a movie star/ and when you go for her heart/ she’ll (Bredren she’ll) be gone, long gone/ Bet you wish you didn’t let a good one slip away.” Trust me, that song is so beautifully written. I highly recommend it for anyone going through a break-up.
There is no doubt that Nicola Lionfish has the gift of the pen. Recent songs like"Dear Artist", “Destination Unknown”, “Forgot to Tell You”, “Food for Thought” and her earlier works like “My Melody” Secret Love” “Universal Cry” “Sweet Mockingbird” are a testament to her writing prowess and if anything else, her growth as an artist. It’s no wonder radio stations and sound systems around the world have been clamouring to get a hold of her releases and dubplates. She has worked with producers such as Mystic Man of Sweden (“Destination Unknown”), Chop Chop Productions of Jamaica (“Turn”) , Holland’s Noteasyatall Productions (“Slip Away”) and Phar Far Food Palace Music from Denmark. Her video for 2009 video has been featured on many TV stations internationally, and fans are crying out for more.
Why? Because not only does she have a beautiful voice and is beautiful herself, but Nicola delivers to them songs with meaning. Good music is still alive and well guys!
She is a source of inspiration for many who struggle against violence, injustice and corrupt government. Just take a listen to her song “Destination Unknown” which speaks of the struggles and discrimination that Haitian’s face. “How is their life less than ours?” she implores, and begs those listening- “Enlighten me, I didn’t know there were different rules for our own kind.” I love the last line: "If you didn’t understand the first time, press repeat at the end of the song."
Please note that this song was not her first effort to show support to the people of Haiti, having sung about them long before the January 2010 earthquake. Nicola also supports and contributes financially to the Poor Man Movement, a grassroots community development project in Kwa Thema. South Africa.
Like the ocean waves that gently kiss the sands of her island home, Nicola’s clear voice, captivates all who it washes over. Her lyrics are full of strength, love, faith, hope and spirit. She has found new ways to interpret the Reggae sound. With her growing following of music lovers as well as industry interests there is no doubt Nicola Lionfish is truly a star on the rise.
Please take some time to learn more about her and listen to her wonderful songs.
Beautiful like the ocean, Strong like the coconut tree that gives it shade, quick like the fish that swims within…Nicola Lionfish you are The Lime Certified!
Q&A
1. I love your voice Nicola, I get an Erykah Badu vibe when I hear it. Do you get compared to other artists? How do you feel about such comparisons?
I rarely get compared to other artists, but if I do, then I’m always told that my vibration is similar to that of Erykah Badu. I am not offended by this in any way; but rather smitten/honored at the same time. Most of my supporters tell me that the reason they love my music is because I am different from the rest.
2. How have you been received locally?
Locally-No support. Why? A prophet is never honored in his own yard. Sad but true. One has to buss elsewhere before you receive support in your own country.
3. Do you have any reggae songs in German?
I don’t have any reggae songs in German. I have written and recorded German songs in the past. I plan to do a collabo in the near future with German-speaking artists. However, I wish to buss as an English-speaking artist. If I buss because of a German tune, ( initially) I will always be expected to produce German material.
4. When you moved to Germany what lessons did you learn on that journey?
I moved to Germany at a very young age on my own. Having to learn a new language from scratch, put myself through college and the saga goes on…That’s a chapter within itself. Most importantly on this journey, I found myself...
5. What is an ideal date with Nicola Lionfish?
LOL- I dont go on dates.
6. Have you ever had an embarrassing moment on stage?
Oh yeah. Lol. I think every artist, if honest, would say yes. Laughing hard. Everything that could go wrong went wrong. I still sang the song but afterwards I wished I could crawl underneath a rock and never come out. Now, I can smile about it because all these elements contribute towards your growth in life and in the music business. Lessons well learned.
7. These days it seems the more popular a female artist is the less clothes she has on. Are you ever filled with the urge to be more sexy?
NO Suh! I think women can be sexy with clothes on. To each its own… Who am I to judge any person? The focal point should be on the vocals and presentation and not on competing to see who could be more naked. Personally, I think those vibes should only be for behind closed doors—between you and your partner. What man wants a woman if the whole world has already seen what’s underneath the package? and of course.. Have some self respect!
8. Who are your top five artists for 2010 so far?
*Taurus Riley
* Queen Ifrica
* Pressure
*Jah Vinci
* Marcia Griffith
9. Do you have any tattoos?
I do. They were done before I began my trod; two—to be exact. I don’t need to describe them right? (smiling) They are hidden. If you can see them then that means you are too close… lol
10. What is your favorite:
Vacation spot: Still is and will always be Jamaica
Girl's name: Sayuri, Lilo & Amielle
TV shows: I dont watch much tv but if I do, its Discovery Channel & Cartoon Network

The first time I saw Shawn "Da Ma$tamind" Noel was Houston Caribfest, on the big stage. I forget the year. He was playing guitar, for Asylum I think. Whether it's Fay-Ann Lyons' commanding you to "Breakaway" on the Pot O' Gold Riddim, Bunji and Patrice wooing you to to "Come to the Islands" or Crazy and 3rd Bass' charming you with a fresh spin on the classic "Nani Wine," know this my people, my people....those wicked HOT beats come courtesy of Mastamind Productions, the company he started five years ago with his wife Natasha.

Shawn Noel, the youngest of three boys, was born in Siparia, Trinidad . While attending Siparia Boys' R.C., he learned to play the guitar and the cuatro. By age 8 he was a member of his families Parang Group Dulzura Caliente where his Mom Hazel Noel was the lead vocalist his Dad Simon was the Guitarist his brother Selvon was the panist, his other brother Shedron played the box bass and Shawn of course played the cuatro. He then joined the church choir and taught himself to play the keyboards.
At St. Benedict's College in La Romain, Shawn studied the sciences, but his love for music never wavered and by form five he joined Joey Rivers' Band Rhythm and Moods . At Joey's studio, Shawn learned to create his own beats, and this was when his mom, realizing her son's potential, purchased a computer and some producing programs to encourage Shawn's musical growth.
By the time he graduated, Shawn then started studying to become an electrical engineer this is where he was approached by Junior of the Sensation Band , he quickly grabbed at the opportunity and became the keyboardist for the band. The Sensation Band had recently teamed up with Bunji Garlin and this is where he first met his first inspiration, Daryl Braxton, who at the time was producing for the vocalist in the band. Shawn let Daryl listen to some of his earlier attempts at producing, and he encouraged him to sit in on some of his recording sessions and this inspired Shawn to take producing seriously.
In 2003, the Sensation Band , now known as The Asylum, was on tour in the United States and while on tour, Bunji Garlin became aware of Shawn's Talents, he was producing beats using the bands equipment, Bunji invested in a laptop and it was fuel to Shawn's producing fires. So I guess it was only fitting that Bunju dubbed him Da Mas$tamind.....a fitting title for someone who has contributed orignial and creative sounds to the Soca genre.
He then hooked up with Budha, a well known producer from the Producer's Coalition of America (this group is responsible for producing music for some of Hip Hop and R&B's well known artists such as Queen Latifah, Busta Rhymes, Destiny's Child, and Dr. Dre). Budha took Shawn under his guide and introduced him to professional producing software, giving him a crash course on it's technicalities. By the end of 2003 Shawn had produced several songs on Bunji's Graceful Vengeance album, including "Warrior Cry" ( Trinidad and Tobago 's Soca Monarch 2004), The Latin beats of "Snake Oil" (Part 2) and the soulful rhythms of "One Family". He then went on to co-produce the Nightshift Riddim, working with Machel Montano, Benjai, Gailann, Maximus Dan, Mistah Shak (his eldest brother) and Collis Durante.
In 2005 Shawn did it again, he produced two riddims that year, the Pot O' Gold and the Nutmeg Riddim, and Bunji Garlin's Song "Blaze De Fire" on the Pot O' Gold Riddim again won him 1st Place at the International Soca Monarch competition.
In 2006 Shawn pulled a hat trick and produced and composed the music behind Shurwayne Winchester's "Don't Stop", which won him 1st Place in the International Groovy Soca Monarch (yes, my people, again). It was also this year that Mastamind Productions started their annual Soca compilation Da Mastamind Project and their Christmas Compilation A Mastamind Christmas.
Shawn is now a front line singer for Y.O.U, Shurwayne Winchester's band, and no it wasn't a fly-by night kind, random occurrence. His journey to center stage has long been in the making. Mistah Shak wrote the lyrics for his first song called "I Produce This." In 2007 he teamed up with well known Chutney Soca artiste Rikki Jai on "Pagal." With humorous Soca artiste Patch Shawn poked fun at ladies who have de horse tail on "she head" on a track entitled "De Tail Gone," More collaborations followed: 2008's "J'Ouvert Jam" with Lyrikal, "Rum and Roti" with Patch, which also secured them a spot in the 209 Soca Chutney Monarch finals and International Groovy Soca Monarch.
His latest release is "Wuk-Up Heaven"which I have included below. You can log on to his Official Website to listen the many songs he has produced for other artists, including the parang favorites he has produced like this one (click).

Q&A
1. What was the first song you produced that you heard on the radio? What did you do?
I think that was Bunji Garlin’s “One Family”. I was in a taxi at the time heading from Siparia to San Fernando and all I could do was smile, proud that music I’d produced was playing on radio.
2. Who is your dream collaboration with?
Wow! Uhmmm… Well, I was able to achieve one of my dream collaborations so far. That was with my mother who had passed away before I had really started producing music. But thanks to technology…Other than that, my influences are varied so to pick one dream collaboration is hard… Stevie Wonder to Busta Rhymes to Adam Levine from Maroon 5 to Linkin Park and several others in between.
3. What kind of car describes you?
I’m just simple and fun loving; not quite sure what kind of car would embody that though. But my dream car… these days, is a black Mercedes-Benz S500. There are cars… then there’s Mercedes-Benz! Damn! Sounds like an ad right there. I’m calling them as soon as I’m finished with this. Hahaha!
4. Has anyone told you something to make you cry?
Yep… Happened a few times already. I’m not ashamed of it.
5. If you could spy on anyone, who would it be and why?
Hmmm… Being a producer myself, I’d have to say super-producer Timbaland. I’ve always been a huge fan of his work. I’d love to be a fly on the wall in his studio!
6. What is the naughtiest thing you’ve done in public?
7. What is your most used word or phrase?
Antidisestablishmentarianism. LOL!!!
8. Is there anything about your success that you find surprising?
Well honestly, the bit of success I’ve experienced so far in itself is a bit of a surprise still. That’s because year after year, more and more, the success of an artiste depends on “who yuh know”, “who is yuh friend” and “who yuh good with”. The merit of your music doesn’t necessarily play that much a part anymore
So for little old me, it’s still kind of surprising that I was able to enjoy a bit of success.
9. If you only had 5 hours in your favorite city in the world where would you go and what would you do?
My “favorite city” isn’t quite a city… it’s a little town in south Trinidad: Siparia; and I’d spend every minute of those 5 hours with the people I grew up with. My immediate family and my extended family in Prana mean the world to me and I love each and every one of them.
10. What is your favorite:
Boy’s name?-Shawn (I made that one too easy, wheh:-)
Actor-Denzel Washington
Place to watch the world go by- The beach

He said he’s an observer. He doesn’t speak much. He’s right. As he leans against the trunk of his Mercedes-Benz, the long chain dazzles, the blinged-out watch glitters as the night-lights dance on its wide face. Sporting a graphic tee and designer jeans topped off with a baseball cap slanting just so, Daniel “Chino” McGregor lets his confidence do the talking. His lyrical prowess belies his quiet and well-mannered nature. A son of Reggae royalty, a winner of awards recognizing his contributions to Reggae, and an artist with regular rotation on Jamaican entertainment television and radio, you almost expect him to be a diva.
Born on February 12th 1983, Daniel “Chino” McGregor was destined for a life in music. With Reggae legends such as the late Dennis Brown, Marcia Griffiths, Judy Mowatt and Gregory Isaac; as well as Dancehall heavyweights like Bounty Killa and Beenie Man making regular stops at his father’s Big Ship Studio, he absorbed a wealth of information; the fruits of which are quite visible today. At age nine he joined Vaz Preparatory School Choir and two years later performed at Jamaica House for guests including then Prime Minister PJ Patterson. His career officially began when he was asked by Bryan (brother of Papa San) to contribute a rap verse to the song “Joy”. Two collaborations with Kiprich followed: “Leggo Di Bwoy” and “Gimmi Di Gyal.” The former rose to the top of local charts and enjoyed heavy video rotation and radio airplay both in Jamaica and abroad. By the time he left Wolmer’s High School Chino added Selector to his list of talents as he played for the sound System Omega Disco. After graduation he gained experience in the USA where he worked with Slip N Slide Records, home to artistes such as Trina and Trick Daddy.
Chino has performed at major shows such as Irie Jamboree, Rototom Sunsplash, Sean Kingston Coke Zero Concert, and well as award shows including Youth View Awards and EME Awards in 2010. He has been featured in a National Geographic documentary called 'The Music Nomad - Made in Jamaica' which explored Jamaican music and culture. Even the New York Times took notice of the combined talents of Chino, his brother Stephen, his sister Shema and the 'Captain' his father Freddie McGregor. With them he has toured metropolitan US cities such as New York and Miami, countries such as the UK, France and Germany, Italy, Japan, Gambia and of course several islands the region including Bermuda and the US Virgin Islands.
As a writer, singer, rapper, DJ, producer, and instrumentalist (he plays guitar, bass, piano and drums) Chino is truly a well-rounded musician. He has written, co-written and produced tracks for artists such as Da’Villle, TOK, Wayne Marshall, Elephant Man, Kiprich, Delly Ranx and of course his father, Freddie McGregor. A major milestone in his career was a collaboration with his father “There’s a Reward For Me”on the Grammy-nominated album Anything for you. And the hits keep coming: “ Girls Dem Straight” (produced by Kurt Riley for the Worthington project) was a favorite amongst the females, Buss It Pon Dem” (on the Cartoon Riddim), “ Inna di Club”(on the 12 gauge riddim-H20 productions),”Redbull And Guiness” and “Ghetto Whisky” both featured Delly Ranx, “Formula,” ”Do So Fah” (breaking news riddim) and Gyal Ting( Roach’s Mad Ting riddim) earned him widespread popularity in the industry. Some of his more recent hits include "Forgive Me" (New Chapter Riddim), "Call We Name" (JukeBox Riddim) "Me and You (Secret) with Alaine "Protected," "Pon Your Head,” “From Mawnin”. "Telephone Gallis" on the Boops Riddim. Find It Hard with Dean Fraser ,"In the Street" (Bad People Riddim) are his latest hits for 2010.
And though were only in the second month of the year, it has been a great run thus far. His sponsor Coke Zero put on a massive show in January with Chino being one of the major acts of the evening. He was nominated for 'Breakthrough Artiste of the Year' (which he won), 'Singjay of the Year' and 'Most Improved Artiste of the Year' at the Excellence in Music and Entertainmen (EME) Awards where he also performed. The following day hosted the Youth View Awards (YVA's) along with Lady Rennae and Teyanna Taylor. He was nominated for Male Artiste of the Year' and his mega hit "From Mawnin" was nominated for Song of the Year-Dancehall. He walked away with the award fro 'Young Hot & Hype Male Artiste of the Year!
Young Hot and Hype indeed, Chino knows how to get listeners dancing to his songs. His catchy lyrics over Stephens hypnotizing beats are a definite crowd-pleaser.
Introverted artiste, lyrical stylist, Chino you are The Lime Certified!
Q&A
1. What is the one thing you have done for a friend without being asked?
Without being asked? Hmm, I do good things, like every day…without being asked, That’s my natural personality. Always helping people, always giving people good advice, always teaching people. It’s not really an extra effort, like I have to go out my way and help somebody.
2. If you could describe yourself as a household appliance what would you be and why?
Wow what a question, (laugh)…I guess anything that’s musical. So I would assume a kettle for example, cause it whistles and sings when it gets hot and bubbly.
3. Can you describe your ideal woman and have you met her?
I don’t think there is such a thing as an ideal woman, or a perfect woman—that’s kind of a toughie, honestly. Cause there might be certain things you find in this woman that you really dig, but she is lacking other stuff. There might be these stuff that are lacking in this woman that you find in another woman but she is also lacking those other stuff. Me personally, I have never come across that completely 100% perfect woman that has all these perfect qualities.
4. If you were are tree what would you be?
I would love to say a marijuana tree (but people would pick you, and smoke you), Well, any other tree people would pick you and do stuff to you. (so that…) Am I allowed to say that, I don’t know?? (yeah it’s whatever you’re comfortable with)..Yah, I’ll stick with that.
5. Can you list three things that make you feel sexy?
Sexy? (yeah) Fine clothes-fitted, Italian preferably, nice cologne )I’m a cologne freak, umm just being properly groomed-fresh from the spa
6. Name one place that you haven’t visited but would like to and why?
I’d love to visit Egypt, for historical reasons. I’m very deep and the whole Biblical aspect of Egypt and Ethiopia.
7. What did you do yesterday?
What did I do yesterday??? Wow…umm I recorded. Took care of my business in the streets.
8. If you could walk in the footsteps of anyone who would it be and why?
If I could. If I could…ummm that’s a tough question, cause as much as you emulate those before you, admire and respect those before you, you need your own identity. Its always important to observe those before you and learn from their mistakes and I think that helps you to become a man and your own man, and your own individual so I’m not really keen on walking in the shoes. Bob Marley’s the greatest, he’s the King but he made mistakes. As great as he Micheal Jackson the King of Pop he made mistakes. We have to learn from him; and a lot of those that came before us.
9. If you had to do a song with two people from any genre who would you want to collaborate with?
Amy Winehouse and Stevie Wonder
10. What are your favorites?
Cologne-Valentino
Sport- football
female actress-Gabrielle Union

"Forgive Me" On The New Chapter Riddim produced by Stephen "Di Genius" McGregor
Official video Fom Mawnin (Never change)"
When you are known on a first-name basis in households around the world, it's safe to say that you're some-kind-of famous--Angelina, Kanye, Reese, Paris, Mary, Jen (no not JLo) all share that commonality. In the world of Reggae it's no different. We have our Bob, our Dennis, our Marcia and of course our Freddie. As you will see very shortly, fame has not gone to his head, nor has it worn him down. Freddie Mcgregor's musical flame is as strong as ever and even more so now that his children are blazing their own musical trails. But more of that later. Let's start at the beginning.
Internationally-acclaimed, Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and producer, Freddie McGregor boasts a lengthy career that started all the way back in the 1960s, when he was just seven years old. In 1963 he joined with Ernest Wilson and Peter Austin to form The Clarendonians, and began to record for the Studio One label. McGregor worked with producer Niney the Observer during the late 1970s and early 1980s, and others including Junjo Lawes, Linval Thompson, and Gussie Clarke.
Influenced by the sounds of Stevie Wonder, the legendary Bob Marley, Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, Bob Andy and many others, Freddie finessed his talent with early tracks like "Why Did You Do It" and "Do Good and Good Will Follow You." In the mid-sixties he teamed up with Ernest "Fitzroy" Wilson to form the duo Freddie and Fitzroy while he continued to develop his craft. In 1975, Freddie's musical and lyrical content changed with a strong slant towards lyrics of social consciousness with tunes like "Mark of the Beast," "I Am A Rasta" and reggae classic "Bobby Babylon." In 1977 Freddie released his long awaited album Mr. McGregor, which contained reggae mainstays such as "Zion Chant," "Rastaman Chant" and "Walls of Jericho." This album marked a major milestone in his stellar career and in 1981 his tune "Big Ship" became one of reggae's biggest hits, earning him a permanent place in reggae music history.
Equally at home in lovers rock or roots & culture, this unstoppable wonder boasts many hits like "Push Come to Shove," "Africa Here I Come," "Just Don't Want to Be Lonely," "I Was Born A Winner," "Guantanamera," his signature "Big Ship"; "Lock Dem’ Down" and "Bangarang," which were both chart topping #1 hits from his Comin' in Tough.
In 1989, Freddie launched his own record label, Big Ship, featuring Jamaica Classics Volume One as the first major release. Part of this compilation included popular tunes like Little Roy's "Prophecy" and Derrick Harriot's "The Loser." Today, Big Ship is the largest and most recognized reggae label in Japan handling its own production, manufacturing, distribution and promotions. To date, Big Ship has produced several reggae artists including General Degree, Cutty Ranks, Mikey Spice, Benjy Myaz and Freddie’s daughter Yeshemabeth. His album entitled Anything For You featuring the songs "Uncle Sam," "I See It In You" and "Anything for You," was nominated for a Grammy. Recently Freddie produced the historic Super Stars Extravaganza DVD, highlighting rare concert footage from the 1989 Denbigh Show Ground (May Pen, Clarendon, Jamaica). The DVD features live performances by the great Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Cocoa Tea, Barrington Levy, Frankie Paul, Carlene Davis and the legendary Tamlins.
Over the years, Freddie has consistently “given back” to the community in many ways. He produces his own concert entitled RockSteady Meets Reggae, which promotes unity within the reggae fraternity. He also donates to charities throughout the world and manages his own US and England based children's organizations; Big Ship Foundation Inc. and the Freddie McGregor Children’s Fund, both of which provide services and funding to renovate schools.
Freddie McGregor continues to please reggae fans and music lovers throughout the world headlining international concerts and venues including Poland's Blue Note, Japan's Jumping Splash, Reggae Sunsplash (Clapham Common), the Cartegena Festival (Colombia), Midem (France), the Jamaican Expo (performing for Nelson Mandela and Prince Charles), the London Hammersmith Apollo - performing with John Holt and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Annual Caribbean Tourism Week (NYC) and many others. On August 8, 2003, Jamaica's Prime Minister, P.J. Patterson, honored Freddie with the prestigious Jamaican Order of Distinction in recognition of his contribution to Jamaica’s music and culture. His popular tune, "Lovers Rock," was featured in the critically acclaimed HBO exclusive Disappearing Acts and Harlem’s famous Apollo Theater saluted Freddie with the honor of being an Apollo Living Legend. Freddie McGregor is currently the chairman of Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JARIA).
McGregor has spanned nearly every stylistic shift in Jamaican music, from ska and rocksteady to Rastafarian roots reggae to lovers rock (his particular specialty) to dabblings in dancehall, ragga, and dub. Now it's time for Reggae Pop and through his son's Daniel (AKA Chino) and Stephen (AKA Di Genius) Big Ship is becoming the hit-maker in contemporary Reggae. Popular artists like Sean Paul, Mavado, Vybz Kartel, Bramma, Alaine, Laden and many others have sung on Big Ship produced records, many of which become radio favorites. Freddie is still the captain though, and plans to steer it with a steady grasp wherever the music takes him.
Generous giver, youthful entertainer, it-seem like-you're-a-good-father-who-train-your- children-right-cause-they-so-nice-an- mannerful-and friendlyand-ting--ummm-er (:-) Freddie McGregor you are The Lime certified!
Q&A
1. Can you name one place you’ve never visited but would like to and why?
Yea. You know say me waan go Israel. It has so much spiritual relevance to my thoughts and beliefs and there are some things I would love to clarify for myself.
2. You’ve been in the industry for decades; do you see yourself calling it quits any time soon?
No. Music is something you can’t quit. If it choose you, you can’t quit. In music many are called few are chosen. If you are chosen you can’t quit. I think I was chosen to do this—I’ve been doing it since I was seven and I ‘m still doing it. So there’s no quitting just go on till you can’t go on any more.
3. Ever been star struck? Who was the celeb?
I can’t remember ever being…I’m trying to think back to my early days. But no, not really. When I became signed to Polydore we had people ah open limousine everyday it didn’t really dawn on me that I was a star-- that I could have taken the praise for things like having top 10 singles in England at the time. We did top of the pops, just about all the major television programmes. But, I think if you are originally a grounded person you’re gonna stay humble. Some people get excited about what is happening and oftentimes get carried away, some people manage to stay grounded. Bob Marley did that and I am a big fan and admire him in many more ways than one. One of the things that I learned from Bob was the seriousness of not just the music, but the business and being able to have the control necessary to run an operation. It was through that determination and knowledge that I managed to set up Big Ship.
4. What do you like most about yourself?
About myself??? Oh my what a ting. What me love most bout myself??? The ting weh mi love most bout myself is to be able to give. Yeah, and it look like a ting with music and certain artists. As I say that mi reflect pon Dennis Brown. He give till him give away everyting—all himself. I love to give. I love people—that was always my ting. As a youth growing up it was very difficult. Half the times you see a long line of people outside a Mr Cox studio waiting for an audition. This man don’t sound real good and they tell him to come back inna three months time and him just leave and you can see pon him face that him a come back inna three months time. A next one they say come back a two weeks; and the next you wait over there so. And you just watch that kind of situation a gwan, I was fortunate to not have to go through that and mi realize say need to help some people who less fortunate and don’t’ have the opportunity to go to some of the more fancy studios to get a break. Jjust maybe we might be able to help some people get a different life or make a difference inna dem life. So far we are doing that. You can just look around and you see a Mavado, Elephant Man, Sean Paul, Kartel—all the artists that we’ve worked with, there’s a difference with them today as opposed to when they just started as a result of being able to walk through here freely and come get them stuff done- which make them become more famous (told him he’s getting it back) ya man, pure blessings! Look here, see the youts a par around that’s how we get our blessings. I believe the more you give, the more you get, and that has been my experience and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.
5. If you could have dinner with any three people describe the moment?
I would like to have dinner with the president of the United States, Barack Obama to address the issue of deportation. The simple question I would like to ask Mr. Obama is why no country is allowed to deport a US citizen while the US is allowed to deport any person or persons from a different country. Doesn’t make sense to me so I’d like to take him up on that one.
Queen Elizabeth- me woulda just love talk to her about her meeting with His Imperial Majesty and what commitment she made as far as repatriation and the African Diaspora and if that is something she still upholds and if one day in the near future we might get the assistance promised to us.
Dada Mandela- I would just love to sit down with him, cook him a nice meal and just ask him if he could tell me what it was like during those years in prison. The cause-we understand that already, that’s why we love him so dearly; but if him coulda just share some of his experiences with me that would just set my life straight!
6. What do you like to do when you are alone?
I love a quiet surrounding, cause it makes me think. Two things I love other than music is fishing and horse racing. I guess the horse racing gives me a thrill that releases the tension. As an entertainer and creator, mi love a nice clean meditation and mi love fishing for the meditation that it brings. So racing kinda gives you that excitement, that adrenaline rush and fishing—if you’ve never been fishing before the first time you catch a nice fish pon your line you not going waan stop fish. More than just the feel is the meditation. You have to throw that line and diligently wait for the fish to come and take it up. So during the time that you wait so many things come on your mind. Mi write a few songs waiting for fish. I love fishing dearly.
7. What did you do to celebrate on your last birthday?
I didn’t do anything. I doh remember. Where was I on my last birthday? I doh remember you know. The last birthday mi had, mi tink de yout dem did keep party for me. Umm, I am kind of past that you know? Sometimes dem force it, and you know you just roll with it. I don’t so much look forward to my birthday. I look forward to my yout dem birthday. I look forward to celebrating with them. I’ve gone through nuff birthdays.
8. What’s the craziest thing you’ve done for someone of the opposite sex?
I dunno if it really crazy, but I got married because of love..yeah that’s a cool one.
9. What is your most used word or phrase?
'Getting’ it done' or 'get it done.'
10. What are your favorite:
